Artist: Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck
Date: 1641
Description: A young girl dressed in formal clothing is portrayed to resemble a young adult woman. At the time, it was very common to make children appear like adults. Only her facial expression betrays that she is trying to play her role here.
Artist: Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael
Date: ca.1668
Description: The flowing water cascading down and the fallen trees. Nature is known for destroying things but also for creating new ones, which is clearly visible here. In the distance, you can see the church tower rising above it as a beacon of peace.
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
Date: 1829 - 1833
Description: A gigantic wave with some boats trying to sail against it. In the wave, it is possible to see a claw, which can be imagined as the force of nature or the strength of the rowers. It is possible that it could be a tsunami. The location Kanagawa was often devastated by tsunamis. This painting was created by a Japanese artist. In all his paintings, Mount Fuji appears.
Artist: Henriƫtte Ronner-Knip
Date: ca. 1878
Description: The burning cigar on the ashtray and the playing cat (who is interested in the dominoes) create an exciting story in the painting. At any moment, the ashtray could fall due to the kitten playing.
Artist: Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael
Date: ca. 1668 - 1670
Description: A landscape of the Netherlands. At the time, almost every landscape featured a windmill. This painting enhances its Dutch identity with the lowlands and water. And, of course, not to forget the cloudy weather. In the background, the church of Wijk bij Duurstede can be seen.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh
Date: 1887
Description: The reason Vincent van Gogh created so many self-portraits is that it allowed him to save money by not hiring a model. Through these works, he could experiment with the new colorful French painting style. In this painting, he depicted himself as a sophisticatedly dressed Parisian, using loose, rhythmic brushstrokes in striking colors.
Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn
Date: ca. 1665-1669
Description: The people in this portrait are Isaac and Rebecca. To capture their loving moment, Rembrandt painted them in this intimate pose. This was very important to them, as Isaac would have been killed if he had not expressed his love. His wife would then have been taken by King Abimelech.
Artist: Johannes Vermeer
Date: ca. 1660
Description: The Milkmaid is actually a woman who delivered milk to people's homes, but this does not align with the painting. In the painting, a kitchen maid is depicted. This is evident from her simple clothing and the starched headpiece. She is pouring milk from a jug into a bowl, with other food items placed on the table. She is standing by the window, pouring the milk, which causes the light to fall beautifully on the table and on her.
Artist: Johannes Vermeer
Date: ca. 1660
Description: A painting of an ordinary street from that time. The street still exists today, but it has changed with the passing of time. The location of this painting is Vlamingstraat 40-42 in Delft. The houses are very simple, with old walls covered in whitewash, and the cracks are clearly visible.
